Taurba - After Action Report 4 (continued again)

Safeway was more what I was expecting from a settlement. Unlike Trosk, they had walls and guard patrols.

Our first order of business was to seek out the dwarven tanner, Urzon. He was the friend of Gvint’s that the obsidiman was supposed to be coming to see. When we reached the tanner’s home and business, we were told that he was not there by his wife, Gretva. She claimed that both Urzon and his human assistant, Ruga were missing. Gretva told of a visit by strangers a few days before trying to get Urzon to do some work for them. They wanted him to use his skills to tan Espagra hides. The tanner had refused and went missing shortly afterward. She also claimed that Gvint had not visited either.

We promised Gretva that we would try to find Urzon. Oren, Ermin and I went to visit the magistrate to see what information he could provide. Quinn and Cetharel went to the local tavern, the Clankin’ Steins.

We sought out the magistrate at the local tower at the center of town. No one answered when we knocked. We heard the sound of practice combat in the near distance and went to investigate. We found the magistrate drilling the local militia. When they had finished, we approached him to ask some questions. The magistrate was a t’skrang named K’Srak T’Sar.

We asked about Urzon and Gvint and the magistrate claimed not to know them. We told him that we had just spoken to Urzon’s wife and that she had reported him missing. K’Srak T’Sar further insisted that he knew nothing about it. When asked about Ruga, we got a similar response. The magistrate seemed friendly enough but we left puzzled and frustrated with his answers as they made no sense.
We met Quinn and Cetharel at the tavern. They, too had had no luck. The proprietor, a dwarf named Smitty, was also friendly but seemed to have amnesia regarding the tanner.

We got the location of Ruga’s house from Gretva and went there to investigate. We found the home shuttered and the doors locked. Knocking and calling to Ruga did not yield a response. I decided that it was time for some answers and used my troll gifts to open the door. Inside we found Ruga, hiding under his bed.

Once we convinced him that we meant no hard, we could get some information. He saw a group of men, comprised of humans and dwarves, take Urzon. By description, these sounded like the attackers from the woods that were after Blanca. Since the attack, Ruga had barricaded himself in his home and hid in fear. He feared that the same men would come for him as well.

Ruga explained that the reason that the townsfolk had not told us of Urzon. The tanner apparently had a checked past and had come to Safeway for a new start. As outsiders, they thought that we might be threats to Urzon. Armed with this knowledge, we approached the magistrate again.

This time K’Srak T’Sar came clean and admitted to knowing Urzon. We told him of the danger that we suspected that these men posed. He agreed to convene a town meeting to see if anyone else could supply some clues as to where they might be.

With assurances from Ruga, Gretva and K’Srak T’Sar, the townsfolk opened up as well. We determined that these bandits had been seen and were active in the fields and woods on the outskirts of town.

After the meeting, we investigated the area. On the way we were finally reunited with Gvint. Apparently, we had gotten ahead of the obsidiman in our travels to Safeway. It was good to see our friend.

On a farm where there had been reports of bandit activity we found dead squirrels left as bait, presumably for Espagra. The meat had been treated with a poison. We decided to stake out the area and engage the bandits when they came to check their traps. Before long we heard noise from the nearby woods and went to investigate.

Bookkeeping

I have updated the party treasure list. This includes everything that we have that is unassigned to a character. This also includes valuables of which Gvint is due a share.

I have updated the current characters sheets for Quinn and Taurba which include the LP spent through the end of last session. If you would like your current copy posted, please sent it to me.

Taurba - After Action Report 4 (continued)

Comnar took us up river on his ship, the Wave Glider. Our first stop on our journey to Safeway was the town of Portage. As we were pulling into port, two other ships engaged in a pitched battle over a berth. One ship was the clear victor and claimed the slip. From our vantage, it was a wreckless and dangerous display with the potential to harm innocent by-standers It was explained to us that both vessels were crewed by T’skrang and that this kind of thing was common.

We docked shortly after the T’skrang and entered the town for the night. Ermin, in pursuit of the crew, was the first at the gate. The guards questioned him and charged him an entry fee. The rest of us approached as I was counting out coins. To our surprise, we were hardly questioned at all and were changed less for the four of us to enter than Ermin paid alone.

We got a limited taste for a big city. Following the T’skrang lead us to a tavern. Captain M'graw and the crew of the Draco Felix celebrated their “victory”during the “Great Battle for the Most Choicest of Berths at Portage where the Draco Felix Bravely and Heroically Bested the Tail-dragging Crew of the Serpent's Maw.” Ermin and Oren reveled with the crew. It was good for Ermin to socialize with his own kind. Quinn also sought socialization outside our circle while Cetharel and I held a quite table near the back. Not sure of the way things are done on the outside, I did pay respect to Captain M’graw. I gave her a knowing nod as Ermin demonstrated Dragon Tornado Style for the onlookers behind me. I only have one T’skrang in my unit, I am not sure how one focuses a whole crew.

The next day, Comnar dropped us on the west side of the Tylon river. We thanked Comnar for his aid and started our over-land journey to Safeway. Since departing the badlands, we changed our travel schedule to something more natural. We moved during the day and camped during the night.

Along our travels we experience an awesome and terrifying event. The sky was darkened by a flock of Espagra. Mostly the cloud flew overhead but some dipped from the sky with an eye on us. I shouted to the group to head for a stand of nearby trees. I hoped that seeking cover might help us fend off the beasts.

The plan worked partially. After we took to the woods, some of the beasts gave up pursuit. However, three of the beasts did not give up so easily. There were many colors of Espagra and these seemed adept at climbing in trees. We fought the creatures and stung them enough that they flew away. We did not chase after them. We decided to camp in the trees until the danger passed.

The next day of travel was not so eventful. We did what we could to keep the shelter of trees nearby just in case. That night we camped again within the trees. We discovered a statue of Jaspree with a wounded white Espagra draped across its arms. The creature was in a bad way and did not offer us malice. It white color made it unusual. We had not seen any like it in the swarm we had witnessed previously. Seeing its connection to Jaspree, we did what we could to treat its injuries. The creature scratched at the statue. There was a bowl on the ground. It looked to fit into the statue’s hands. We replaced the basin and it filled with water. The Espagra drank and was healed. Our injured also partook of the waters.

During the night, during Ermin’s watch, our camp was approached by two dwarves. They had asked permission to join the fire. Rather than be good guests these scoundrels attacked. The rest of us awoke to nets being thrown on top of us and the battle cry of Ermin. While we struggled to free ourselves, Ermin fought the invaders. His first blow stuck mightily and cleaved the head clean from one of the dwarves. Several others had emerged from the woods. Their target was the white Espagra.

The hunters expected the creature to be weak and wounded but what they found surprised them. The creature exhaled a cone of frosty gas and ice shards. With one of their number dead and the Espagra healed, the attackers decided to retreat rather than face our wrath.

We made it to the town of Safeway without further incident. The Espagra stayed with us. Quinn took to calling it Blanca. Blanca took a shining to Quinn. It stayed with the Obsidiman as we entered town.

Party Treasure

I have recorded our party treasure on the top right of the page. This includes money, goods and items that no one has claimed yet. If someone can and will use the Crystal Raider Shield, please speak up.

We also discovered two grimoires (skulls and gems) which I believe were for Nethermancer and an Elementalist respectively. We did not yet get a list of the spells contained within each.

Taurba - After Action Report 4

Our group headed out through the desolation once more in search of our acquaintance Gvint and his home village, Trosk. Our journey to the north yielded rewards of the spirit after a few days. We started to experience other living things. The badlands had an end. Quinn informed us what these strange things we encountered were. Grass, plants and trees started sparsely but eventually became commonplace across the landscape.

Our journey was filled with wonder but was uneventful until we came into the vicinity of Trosk. It was here that we made contact with the Chakta, large dark feathered flying creatures. Quinn called them birds. The creatures greeted us with their voices projected into our minds! This was a most amazing and also disconcerting experience. We traded food with the birds for information about the area. They were very helpful and provided confirmation that we were on the correct path to reach Trosk.

On the outskirts of Trosk proper, we encountered a garden with an open-air structure. The place was clearly marked with the trappings of the Passion Jasprey. Words of welcome in every language greeted us. There was fresh food and water. We decided to partake and wait for the villagers to make contact.

We did not wait long before a contingent from the village came to meet us. There were six villagers; 3 dwarves, an elf, a t’skrang and a human. Their leader, a dwarf named Harvel greeted us on behalf of Trosk. We returned their greeting with thanks and asked after our friend Gvint. We were informed that he was not currently present and were invited into the village.

We were introduced to the other members of the greeting party. They were Tamvir, a female dwarf, Janair, a female human, and Terranius, a male elf. They were all residents of the village and followers of Jasprey. The remaining members of the party were K’Ryndar, a male T’skrang, representing House K'tenshin and Comnar, a male dwarf, who was a trader from the kingdom of Throal. Both had business interests in the village.

Trosk was a puzzlement to me. It appeared to be a peaceful community positioned on the Serpent River. Lush fields with crops and livestock surrounded the village and a grove of trees. Nowhere to be seen were defensive fortifications nor signs of a guard or militia. Our group was invited to explore the fruits of the town and we were invited to a gathering and meal later in the day. We each took the opportunity to explore as our sensibilities dictated.

At the meeting, we dined and were welcomed again. This provided the opportunity to get to know the people better. We learned that Terranius was from the Theran Empire and he was a believer in slavery. He is a follower of Jaspree but is not well liked by many. Comnar is interested in opening trade with Kaer Uqbar. We had some initial conversations but did not come to a definitive agreement.

We were informed that Gvint had a dream of portent about espagra, a sort of flying lizard, and he left to investigate. He was believed to have traveled to another town called Safeway. It was located to the northwest on the other side of the Serpent River. Our arrival was seen as a sign by the village elders and they agreed that we should be sent to help Gvint. We would travel to Safeway to help him complete his task. Preparations were made. Comnar agreed to take us up river in his ship to another town called Portage from which we could travel on foot to Safeway.

After the meeting, a place was made for us to spend the night. The village elders moved the very trees to form a shelter for us to sleep within. The mighty plants moved into a circle and formed a wall with their trunks and a roof with a canopy of branches. The shelter was sound and should have been comforting but it seemed more like a cage. It was them that I understood how the defenses of Trosk were effected; the magic of the elders and the power of Jaspree.
